I think it really depends on the context David. In theory it’s always good to ask a customer what they want, but in this case, just asking what they would like to be called (client or customer) seems like an unnecessary interaction. That time spent interacting could most certainly be used for something more valuable to the customer/client.

What is most common in your industry? That’s probably the best way to go.

Currently we use Clients and have a client page with their client records. As we have a lot of non professional businesses should we use customer instead or give the business the option to define the terminology they want to use?

From what I read on a expert web developer, he calls his prospects as clients not customers. That made me wanted to find the difference between these words, so that I can use the most suitable word. I always chose to say it as customer when other people used clients.
