A whole manager directing traffic! That is something that you do not hear of everyday. Thank you for the post and it is indeed true that good customer service will make the customers come all over again.

Talk about management skills. I think it’s great that he went out there and went BEYOND his duties. He seems like a genuinely good person because this not only helped the customers, but helped the workers since they’re the ones who come in direct contact with the customers.
There’s a Chic-fil-A opening about 3 miles from my house so I’m anxious to try them out. Never tried it, so I’m excited. Any recommendations on what I should order?

VP, thanks for commenting. I agree that great customer service stories can be very effective training tools. There is no way to create a “how-to” guide for every possible situation. Tales such as the classic Nordstrom tire story (which, admittedly, is a bit over the top) can help instill a service mindset that will hopefully translate into outstanding experiences for our clients.

Companies (and managers) that think outside the box and surprise us with unexpected solutions are the ones that really WOW us as consumers. I love hearing these types of anecdotes. They are great reminders to think more creatively and step outside our comfort zones when finding solutions for clients. I am going to share this story with my employees. I think stories like these are more effective training tools than just typical bullets points on how to handle certain situations.
